I Made the Most Money in My Career After 4 Key Shifts, And So Can You

Let me get straight to it:

The biggest financial leaps in my career didn’t come from switching industries, getting another degree, or waiting for someone to finally recognize my worth.

They came when I made four powerful shifts, internal ones. Because the truth is, your mindset leads your money.

Here are the four shifts that changed everything for me:

1. Mindset: I Stopped Thinking Small

I stopped saying things like “I’ll just be grateful to stay employed” and started thinking like a strategist:

  • What impact am I having?

  • What value do I bring to the table?

  • Where am I shrinking to fit in?

Once I shifted from surviving to expanding, opportunities started finding me.

2. Responsiveness: I Became the Person Who Moves Fast

In every role, I built a reputation for getting things done quickly and with excellence. I didn’t sit on emails or wait to be reminded.

People started seeing me as reliable, efficient, and essential. And when leaders think of you that way, guess what? Your name comes up in rooms you’re not in.

3. Proactiveness: I Didn’t Wait to Be Asked

I didn’t wait to be handed leadership, I practiced it. I looked at what was broken, confusing, or neglected, and I stepped in with solutions.

Being proactive positioned me as someone who didn’t need to be managed closely. That level of ownership? It builds trust, fast and trust builds promotions, raises, and visibility.

4. Influence: I Learned How to Move People, Not Just Tasks

The final shift was a game-changer: I stopped just “getting work done” and started influencing how others feel about the work.

Whether it was how I communicated, collaborated, or coached others, I led with presence, clarity, and confidence. Because when people trust your influence, they’ll follow your lead. That’s when you step into true leadership.

Not every company has a headline-grabbing mission but many outperform their peers in retention and growth. Why? Employee stickiness. In a recent conversation with Sunaina Lobo, Chief People Officer at Omnissa, one truth stood out: commitment isn’t built through perk, it’s built through intentional leadership, cultural consistency, and clarity in how the business wins.

For years, compensation was seen as the ultimate retention lever, pay more, keep talent. But today’s workforce is making different trade-offs. In a recent conversation with Amit Neev, Head of HR, North America at ADAMA, one message stood out: employees may appreciate raises, but benefits shape how they experience their lives every day. The organizations winning in competitive markets aren’t always paying the most, they’re investing the smartest.

CEOs don’t need another order taker. They need an HR executive who understands the business as deeply as the balance sheet and connects employee performance directly to customer outcomes. As Chief People Officer LaToya Lyn shared, credibility isn’t granted by title, it’s earned by bringing insight, ownership, and a clear point of view before being asked.
