This Management Training Was a Waste of Money and Time

I’ll never forget it.

The HR team meant well. They brought in a facilitator. They purchased access to shiny online courses. They invested real dollars into building “better managers.”

But it didn’t work.

I sat through the training, clicking through slides stuffed with theories, frameworks, and acronyms. Not once did I feel like I was being prepared for the realities of leadership.

Meanwhile, my peers were drowning in challenges:

  • One had a team member on the verge of quitting.
  • Another was struggling to coach a direct report into leadership.
  • An engineering manager was battling a project on fire that required tough, high-stakes conversations.

Not one of those problems could be solved by the theories we were being fed. And the truth is—I don’t remember a single framework. What I do remember is how much time was wasted. How much money was wasted.

And maybe worst of all? There was no real community. No space for managers to openly share what was working, what wasn’t, and how to navigate the daily grind of leadership together. We were each left to figure it out on our own.

That’s when it clicked: this is the missing piece.

Managers don’t just need more theory, they need real tools, real strategies, and a trusted community to lean on.

That’s why I created the Supercharged Management Accelerator—a program designed for managers inside organizations who want more than theory:

  • Real scenarios. The challenges managers are facing right now.
  • Real conversations. Guidance on how to coach, lead, and retain talent in tough moments.
  • Real strategies. Tools managers can use the very same day.
  • Real community. A space where managers can finally learn from and support one another.

Because the truth is this: managers don’t remember acronyms. They remember whether they kept a valuable employee, built trust on their team, or had the confidence to step into a tough conversation.

The companies that invest in that are the ones that win.

CEOs don’t need another order taker. They need an HR executive who understands the business as deeply as the balance sheet and connects employee performance directly to customer outcomes. As Chief People Officer LaToya Lyn shared, credibility isn’t granted by title, it’s earned by bringing insight, ownership, and a clear point of view before being asked.

Managers don’t disengage from HR because they dislike people initiatives. They disengage because the help arrives too late. By the time training launches or playbooks are published, managers have already found workarounds—or chosen silence. As Lynne Oldham, Chief People Officer at Dataiku, explains, HR loses credibility in the gap between real-time pain and delayed support. Closing that gap is where impact begins.

When hiring managers delay interview feedback yet complain about roles taking too long to fill, it’s not a talent acquisition failure, it’s a leadership accountability gap. As People leader Nina Xue notes, failing to close the feedback loop signals that hiring isn’t a priority, even when business growth depends on it. TA teams feel the pressure first, but the root issue is leadership behavior.
